Earlier this week, Hurricane Dorian caused unprecedented devastation and at least 20 fatalities in the Bahamas. Today, storm surges and high winds are buffeting the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. Even coastal communities that escape a direct hit likely will sustain serious damage to homes, businesses and fueling facilities.

PEI members in Dorian’s path will play a crucial role in the cleanup and recovery — testing, inspecting, assessing environmental impacts and, ultimately, bringing fueling systems back online.

PEI is ready to assist in this effort, as well. One year ago (as Hurricane Michael approached the Gulf Coast), PEI launched a Disaster Preparation & Recovery Resources page on our website. The site is conveniently organized into three sections:

1. Real-Time Updates and Notifications
   In a natural disaster, access to real-time information can be the difference between life and death. This section includes links to weather bulletins, storm surge maps, FEMA updates and Gas Buddy’s Outage Tracker, a zip code-based search tool that identifies which gas stations in affected areas have fuel and power.
2. Disaster Preparation and Response
   This section links you to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) “Underground Storage Tank Flood Guide” and NACS’s “What UST Owners Can Do After a Flood.” You also can find helpful pre- and post-disaster checklists, guides, forms and tips from the Department of Energy (DOE), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other public and private sources.
3. PEI Resources
   Access the online PEI Directory from this page for a state-by-state list of petroleum equipment professionals. This section also links to five PEI recommended practices of special value before, during and after a natural disaster:

PEI CONVENTION UPDATES, REGISTRATION DEADLINE
Just two weeks remain until money-saving advance registration rates expire for the 2019 PEI Convention at the NACS Show, Oct. 1-4, in Atlanta. Recent additions to the already strong convention education program include:

PEI 1-on-1. PEI 1-on-1 is the place for informal conversations with many of the education session presenters. Other scheduled 1-on-1 sessions include:

• UST Regulatory Q&A. Representatives from the EPA Office of Underground Storage Tanks (OUST) will answer your questions about federal, state and tribal UST regulations.
• PEI Level II Service Technician Training Manual. The PEI Service Technician Training Committee will explain how PEI’s newest training tool can help technicians who have mastered the basics develop their skills even further.
• UST Site Data Standards. PEI is part of a new industry-wide initiative to standardize how UST system data is collected and compiled. Come to learn how this effort will benefit tank owners, operators, regulators and PEI members.

10-Groups Breakfast & General Session: “Influential Leadership.” Author, professor and two-time national championship college basketball player Dan Lier will present three strategies to increase your influence and improve your organization’s productivity. Award-winning speaker Denise Ryan will explain how you can overcome common communication barriers with almost anyone. All women PEI members are encouraged to attend.

Young Executives: “Creating Extraordinary Results in Challenging Times.” It’s easy to walk tall when things are going well, but what happens when things aren’t going so well? Dan Lier, who has advised top business performers for more than 18 years, will share how to generate positive momentum and results in the most difficult times.

HY-VEE DATA BREACH
Hy-Vee announced Aug. 14 that it had uncovered a data breach at fuel islands and other payment processing systems at its Market Grille, Market Grille Express and Wahlburgers locations. An Aug. 19 report by security expert Brian Krebs speculated that up to 5.3 million credit cards might have been compromised. A Hy-Vee press release stated the company is working with federal law enforcement agencies to investigate.

LAWSUIT ALLEGES GM TRUCKS INCOMPATIBLE WITH ULSD
A federal class-action lawsuit filed in August alleges that a high-pressure fuel injector pump in 2011-2016 GM diesel trucks is incompatible with ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD).

According to the plaintiffs, GM knew or ought to have known of the problem because other vehicle manufacturers reported issues with similar pumps as early as 2008. The suit also claims that the pump’s manufacturer specifications require fuel with higher lubricity than that provided by ULSD.

EV NEWS IN BRIEF
Electrify America and EVgo announced an interoperability agreement that will allow drivers to charge on either company’s platforms without additional fees, software or accounts.
Maine will use a portion of its $5.1 million Volkswagen emission scandal settlement to provide hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) purchasers with rebates of up to $2,000. Lower-income households, government agencies and tribal authorities will receive the highest rebates.
Canada committed $2 million to Quebec-based Mogile Technologies Inc. for two EV research projects. The first project will attempt to develop a standard payment method across all public EV charging networks in the country. The second will study how the nation’s utilities can anticipate EV charging needs to better manage the power grid.
China is asking provinces to test “no-go zones” for gasoline-powered vehicles. The government will use the results to evaluate the feasibility of a timeline for phasing out gasoline-powered vehicles.

Matrix Capital Markets Group Inc. advised Schmuckal Oil Co. on the sale of 25 convenience retailing and petroleum marketing assets to True North Energy LLC. The transaction included Schmuckal's small wholesale fuel and transportation businesses.
Shannon and Associates added Robin Neal to the company’s sales team. A graduate of Clemson University, Neal has more than 35 years of retail petroleum experience.
Tank Tech’s headquarters burned to the ground early in the morning on Sept. 4. Within hours, the company relocated to temporary facilities at 3897 State Hwy. H, Sikeston, MO 63801. Rebuilding will begin almost immediately. Read a statement from Tank Tech President and CEO David Russell here.
