Dear PEI Member:

The 2015 PEI Convention was one of the best the association has sponsored in years, with member registration exceeding the 2104 convention in Las Vegas by two and a half percent. Here are the highlights.

Steve Trabilsy, president of Accurate Tank Technologies, North Aurora, Illinois, was elected to serve as the 66th president of PEI. On January 1, Trabilsy will succeed Kevin McKinney, president of McKinney Petroleum Equipment, Mobile, Alabama, in PEI’s top position. Trabilsy is currently serving as PEI vice president.

Craig Hoyer, president of Kubat Equipment & Service Co., headquartered in Denver, Colorado, was elected vice president for 2016. Hoyer has just completed his term as treasurer of the association, and has previously served on the PEI Board of Directors representing District 7.

Eight people were installed as new PEI directors during the annual meeting in Las Vegas. They are James D. Ether, R. M. Dalrymple Co., Inc., Saratoga Springs, New York; Blair D. Shwedo Sr., SouthEastern Petroleum Systems Inc., Charlotte, North Carolina; Sara Hitchcock Beck, MECO, Inc. (Montgomery), Montgomery, Alabama; Kurt Radermacher, Pump & Meter Service, Inc., Hopkins, Minnesota; John W. Moore, Banks & Co., Fresno, California; Jeanne Murphy Murck, Core Engineered Solutions, Inc., Herndon, Virginia; Greg Young, Vaporless Manufacturing, Inc., Prescott Valley, Arizona; and Gregory E. Dubas, Pine Run Construction Corp., Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Conversation about business on the floor of the convention confirmed what members told us in a recent survey: Business is very good. According to the September 22-29 survey of U.S. members, PEI distributors are experiencing a banner year, ranking 2015 a “7.4,” with “5” being average and “10” being their best year ever. They expect more of the same in 2016, giving next year a “7.1” on the same scale. As evidence of their upbeat attitude, members cited EMV-driven sales and service; construction; service; equipment sales; commercial sales and installation; and dispenser sales as high points. More than half (55 percent) of those responding to the survey expect to employ more people in 2016 than in 2015.

Manufacturers responding to the same survey ranked 2015 a “6.0,” down from “6.6” in 2014. Manufacturer members expect a little improvement in 2016. Twenty-five percent of manufacturers responding to the survey cited new products as the primary reason they are satisfied with business conditions today and optimistic about 2016. Nineteen percent mentioned organic growth as the primary reason business is good. Thirty-six percent of manufacturers expect to hire more people in 2016.

When asked to gauge their company’s prospects through 2020, both distributors and manufacturers were very bullish. Seventy-five percent of distributors and 84 percent of manufacturers were either moderately or extremely optimistic about business through the next five years.

The PEI board met twice during the convention. The board:

·         Appointed Robert J. Peavey of PumpTex Inc., Beaumont, Texas, as treasurer of the association.

·         Appointed Kevin McKinney to a three-year term on the PEI Foundation’s Board of Directors.

·         Reaffirmed its decision to proceed with the drafting and publication of Recommended Practices for the Design, Installation, Maintenance and Service of LNG Fueling Systems (PEI/RP1600).

·         Continued sponsorship of PEI’s Profitability Report while expressing concern that the report needs more participants to remain statistically valid.

·         Established a session at PEI’s Atlanta convention in 2016 aimed at gathering information from PEI members about association services for Spanish-speaking members.

The educational sessions and entire convention program planned by the 2015 PEI Education and Convention Committee were extremely well attended and received high marks on-site. (A post-convention survey will be sent to all registered attendees [not booth personnel] soon. Please take three minutes and fill it out.) Presentations by most of the speakers, together with a final registration list and floor plan, and a complete list of attendees (downloadable for PEI members only), are available from the PEI convention page.

A sincere thanks to all of you who volunteered to help us put on this convention. The 10-Group chairmen, Education and Convention Committee members, Find Red volunteers, PEI Priority Club members and session presenters all played huge roles in the success of our convention in Las Vegas. We could not have done it without you.

Mark your calendars for next year’s convention October 18-21, 2016, in Atlanta, Georgia.
