CALIFORNIA SETTLES UST CASE WITH CONOCOPHILLIPS/PHILLIPS
66
ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66 will pay $11.5 million to settle a
lawsuit alleging that more than 560 of their gas stations in California
violated underground storage tank (UST) regulations since 2006. These
violations included failure to: properly maintain leak detection devices,
test secondary containment systems, conduct monthly inspections and train
employees in proper monitoring procedures, according to a statement from the
office of California Attorney General Kamala Harris. ConocoPhillips and
Phillips 66 have sold nearly all of their interests in their California
service stations.
ELECTIONS, PROMOTIONS AND APPOINTMENTS
Members of the Steel Tank Institute-Steel Plate Fabricators Association (STI/SPFA)
elected their 2015 Board of Directors at the organization’s recent annual
meeting in Hilton Head, South Carolina. All newly elected officers are PEI
members. They include Sonny Underwood, Mid-South Steel Products (president);
David Watson, Watco Tanks (vice president); Steve Meeker, Hamilton Tanks
(treasurer); and Terry Cooper, Acterra Group (chairman of the board). Three
other members of the STI/SPFA Board of Directors are also PEI members: Tony
Honey, Modern Welding Co. Inc.; Jerry Schollmeyer, Morrison Bros. Co.; and
Tim Woofter, Stanwade Metal Products.
Southeastern Petroleum Systems (SEPS), Charlotte, North Carolina, has
hired Ken Turcotte as its director of business development and key accounts.
Turcotte has spent 21 years in leadership and management roles in the
distribution and manufacturing sides of the industry.
Tanknology Inc., Austin, Texas, has hired John Nesbit as its
executive vice president of sales and marketing. He has more than 25 years
of petroleum industry experience in key sales, marketing and product
management roles. Nesbit succeeds Richard Schnabel, who held that position
since 1997. Schnabel is now executive vice president of business development
for Tanknology.
Power Integrity Corp., Greensboro, North Carolina, has hired Craig
Jones as its vice president, business development. Jones has over 30 years
of electrical and petroleum industry experience in various sales and sales
management positions.
PETROLEUM MARKETING NOTES
“The New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience Store, Automotive Association (NJGCA)
is supporting state legislation that would offer drivers the option of self-
or full-service at gas stations, reversing its previous stance to oppose
such a move.”—Oil Express, May 19, 2015.
“Discount-for-Cash is not just for breakfast anymore. It’s an old
1980s practice that faded out, and sprang back on the scene just a few years
ago in response to then-burgeoning card fees, but has hung around—and
grown—because it can mute, finesse, or even outsmart ultra-low street price
competition. Discount-for-Cash (DFC) 2015: 16.5% of the station population
offers it, and the average discount is 8.8¢/gallon. Behind the grand big
picture, markets vary tremendously with some all-in for DFC while others
stoutly eschew it. This has long been the case. The fact that DFC has spread
to more and more stations in the past year, when card fees are cheaper than
in years past, is interesting—and points to retail price competition as the
other main reason for charging less for cash than for credit.”—Lundberg
Letter, April 29, 2015.
