Dear PEI Member:

Since PEI published its first recommended practice in 1987, we have strived to produce documents to serve the needs of the industry. This includes not only the subject matter of our books but also the format. As technology changes the way we share information, PEI has endeavored to provide our documents in the formats you prefer. This week we have introduced a redesigned bookstore that will allow you to purchase and use our recommended practices in a variety of new ways.

In April 2013 we began offering recommended practices in electronic format for download. The popularity of these PDF versions has far outpaced our expectations—and so have the requests for more sophisticated features. Working with our partners at Techstreet we are now able to offer each of our documents in print, or as a PDF with some innovative options. Techstreet also offers specialized technical support to assist with any issue you might have with ordering or opening a document.

Each PEI recommended practice is now available with the following options:

  • Print. You receive a copy of the recommended practice just as in the past. The only difference you might notice is that your order ships from Techstreet’s warehouse. As new titles are introduced, your print documents will be fulfilled using print-on-demand technology.
  • Electronic PDF. This option is similar to the secure PDFs we have offered. Print up to two copies and open it on one or two devices. But unlike our previous system you can purchase multiple copies of a PDF document in case others in your office need a copy. You can also copy a limited amount of text from our documents so you can cite the specification or practice.
  • Print/PDF Combo. This new option provides the convenience of both formats at a reduced price. A single transaction gets you the paper book for your library and the PDF to carry with you on your tablet or laptop.
  • Historical Copies. Sometimes you need to know where you’ve been. In case that includes one of our past recommended practices, you’re covered. We now have the version previous to the current version available for all recommended practices.
  • Redline Editions. This makes comparing the current and historical edition painless. Deletions are red and additions are blue. You also receive a clean PDF copy.
  • Enterprise License.  The multi-user PDF option (above) is perfect for small offices. But if you need more than ten copies we suggest you consider this option. This subscription service allows everyone in your company to access the documents you need—whether it’s one RP or the entire library.

One important point we want all members to be aware of involves your PEI-member (discounted) pricing. The new storefront requires you to log in before you begin any transactions. While our old shopping cart allowed you to pick-first-login-later, this is no longer the case. If you browse the recommended practices without logging in, you will only see our retail (nonmember) pricing. If you’re not sure what your username or password is, or whether you even have one, visit our Login Reminder page.

HOUSE BILL WOULD ELIMINATE CORN ETHANOL MANDATE
Rep. Bob Goodlatte
(R-VA) introduced a bill in Congress February 4 which would cap the amount of ethanol allowed in gasoline at 10 percent and eliminate the renewable fuel standard’s (RFS’s) corn ethanol mandate. The RFS, strengthened in a 2007 energy law, requires 15 billion gallons of conventional corn ethanol and 21 billion gallons of advanced ethanol in the nation’s motor fuel supply by 2022. Goodlatte’s bill, the RFS Reform Act of 2015, would remove the conventional ethanol blending requirement from the RFS, leaving only the requirement for petroleum refiners to blend advanced biofuels, such as biomass-based diesel and cellulosic ethanol, into the fuel supply.

BRIEFLY NOTED
The Kroger Co.
will take delivery of 40 heavy-duty liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks over the next several months. The trucks will service a group of the company’s Fred Meyer Stores in Oregon and southwest Washington. The trucks will be refueled from a private LNG fueling station at Fred Meyer’s Clackamas (Oregon) Distribution Center. Kroger has not made definite plans to expand LNG in other locations to fuel its delivery fleet of over 1,500 company-owned tractors.
A bill (SB 0158) was introduced in the Rhode Island Senate February 5 that would provide a 30 percent tax credit of the cost of equipment and installation of alternative fuel dispensing and storage equipment. The bill includes E85, compressed natural gas, LNG, propane, hydrogen and electricity. The bill was referred to the Senate Finance Committee.
“Retail margins exploded 3.5¢ higher in 2014 thanks to a stellar fourth quarter. This, combined with growing gasoline demand and a slight drop in card fees, allowed for the greatest year on record for the gasoline retailing industry. Margin revenue surpassed $25 billion. Retailers were able to achieve an all-time record high of 17.9¢ per gallon on average in 2014 for regular grade. The all-grades pooled average also set a record high at 18.6¢ per gallon.”—Lundberg Letter, January 5, 2015.
