Dear PEI Member:
The PEI Convention in Las Vegas was one of the best the association has
sponsored in years, with attendance up 19 percent over our 2011 convention in
Chicago. Here are the highlights.
Members are feeling fairly positive about
business. According to a survey of 138 distributors conducted on
site at the convention, members are experiencing a good year, ranking 2012 a
"6.8" with "5" being average and "10" being their best year ever. They
expect 2013 to be even better, giving next year a "7.3" on the same scale.
Terry Cooper, president of Acterra Group, Inc., headquartered in
Marion, Iowa, was elected to serve as the 63rd president of PEI. On January
1, Cooper will succeed Joey Cheek, president of JMP Solutions,
headquartered in Tampa, Florida, in PEI's top elected position. Cooper is
currently serving as PEI vice president.
Phil Farrell, president of Double Check Company, headquartered in
Kansas City, Missouri, was elected vice president for 2013. Farrell has just
completed his term as treasurer of the association, and has previously
served on the PEI Board of Directors representing District 6. Kevin
McKinney, president of McKinney Petroleum Equipment, Mobile, Alabama,
was appointed treasurer of the association by the PEI Board of Directors.
Seven people were installed as new PEI directors during the annual
meeting in Las Vegas. They are Jody Porter, E. O. Habhegger Company, Inc.,
Yeadon, Pennsylvania (District 2); Bill Morgan, Collins Equipment Corp.,
Cleveland, Ohio (District 4); Bob Stenstrom, Stenstrom Petroleum Group,
Rockford, Illinois (District 6); John Keller, Petroleum Solutions, Inc.,
McAllen, Texas (District 8); Al Eichorn, PMP Corporation, Avon, Connecticut
(District 10); Tim Weiss, Morrison Brothers Co., Dubuque, Iowa (District
12); and Liz Concannon, Petroleum Card Services, Minden, Nevada (Affiliate
Division).
The educational sessions and entire convention program planned by the
2012 PEI Education and Convention Committee were extremely well attended and
received high marks. Presentations provided by the speakers, together with a final exhibitor list

The PEI board met twice during the convention. Action taken during those two
meetings include:
- Conferred Honorary Membership status on PEI staff member Connie
Dooley, making her the second person in PEI history to receive the honor.
Howard Upton, PEI's executive director from 1951 to 1987 was the first.
Connie (cdooley@pei.org) plans to
retire February 1, 2013.
- Directed staff to work toward making recommended practices available
electronically.
- Discussed the report of the Clean Diesel Fuel Alliance (CDFA) on the
nature and cause of corrosion in underground storage tank systems
containing ultra low sulfur diesel. The board expressed interest in
helping the CDFA conduct a more robust investigation, including assistance
with funding for the next phase of the project.
- Appointed Joey Cheek to a three-year term on the PEI Foundation's
Board of Governors.
- Decided not to seek American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
approval for PEI's recommended practices.
- Directed staff to investigate the feasibility of conducting board
elections electronically.
- Discussed ways to improve participation in the PEI Distributor
Profitability Survey.
A sincere thanks to all of you who volunteered to help us put on this
convention. The 10-Group chairmen, Education and Convention Committee
members, Find Red volunteers, PEI Priority Club members and session
presenters all played a huge part in the overall success of our meeting in
Las Vegas. We appreciate your help.
OIL MARKETING NEWS
Marathon Petroleum Corp., Findlay, Ohio, has signed a definitive
agreement to purchase BP's Texas City, Texas, refinery, related pipelines,
four terminals and retail marketing contract assignments for approximately 1,200
branded sites in the southeastern United States.
Energy Transfer Partners LP, Dallas, Texas, announced October 5
that it has completed its $5.4 billion merger with Sunoco, creating one of
the nation's largest and most diversified energy partnerships. The
deal included a network of approximately 4,900 service stations in 23
states, which most industry observers expect to be sold.
7-Eleven Inc., Dallas, Texas, announced October 12 that it closed two
acquisitions. One deal was with EZ Energy to purchase 67 retail locations in
the Pittsburgh and Cleveland markets. The other was with Handee Marts Inc.
and involved 58 convenience stores located in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., Laval, Quebec, has put 42 Circle K
properties located in the Oklahoma City area on the auction block.
Murphy Oil plans to spin off its U.S. fuel retailing business into a
separate company by the end of next year. Murphy currently owns 1,152 retail
gasoline stations.
PEI MEMBER NEWS BRIEFS
Reliable Oil
Equipment Inc., headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, purchased the assets of
Oil Equipment Supply Corporation (OES) on September 24. The three OES
facilities (Indianapolis, Indiana; Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Louisville,
Kentucky) will be run as branch operations. Reliable also has established an
additional branch operation located at 1507 Parkway View Drive, Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania 15205. The branch serves the Pennsylvania and West Virginia
markets. Reliable added Dave McNall as an outside salesman to work from the
Pittsburgh branch and Tommy Aston to sell to accounts in the Western
Kentucky market.
Petroleum Solutions, Inc., McAllen, Texas, has promoted Cassie Stewart
to corporate sales director. In her new role, Stewart will lead PSI's sales
efforts and work collectively with the company's regional managers, account
managers and sales representatives.
Vaporless Manufacturing, Inc., Prescott Valley, Arizona, has
appointed Walsh, Long & Company, Inc., Naperville, Illinois, to
represent the company in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri,
Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
ALTERNATIVE FUELS
Toyota last month reiterated its commitment to the hybrid car and
expressed skepticism about the future of the pure electric vehicle (EV),
scaling back its sales target for its eO electric car to 100 vehicles in
Japan and the U.S. Nissan, by contrast, remains firmly committed to
EVs. On top of its Leaf model, which sold 23,000 units last year, Nissan, in
its alliance with Renault, plans to bring out seven more all-electric
vehicles in line with a target of having 1.5 million EVs on the road
worldwide by 2016.
The California Advanced Energy Coalition (CAEC) has proposed immediate
action by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to adjust its fuel
regulations to accommodate increased amounts of low-cost, clean-burning fuels
on the market. Current California gasoline regulations cap ethanol blending
at 10 percent. The action proposed by CAEC to CARB would increase
permissible levels of ethanol up to 15 percent.
New Chrysler, GM and Ford vehicles will accept a fuel blend that's 15
percent ethanol (E15), as opposed to the standard 10 percent blend (E10).
For GM, that will begin with 2012 models, while Ford and Chrysler will
accommodate the new fuel in 2013 models.
