| Dear PEI Member: PEI's Board of Directors met last week in Alexandria, Virginia, and made a number of important decisions about the services PEI offers. Here is a summary of actions taken by the group. Revised PEI's Mission Statement. The board tweaked PEI's mission to better reflect the nature of our members' businesses. Interestingly, the word "petroleum" no longer appears in the mission: It is PEI's mission to be the leading authority and source of information for the fuel and fluid handling equipment industries. PEI is committed to promoting the value of distributor services and improving the business relationships and practices of its members. Conference on Vehicle Lubrication and Maintenance Equipment? The board is exploring the possibility of the association sponsoring a conference on vehicle lubrication and maintenance equipment. The first step is to prepare a tentative program for the conference. The next step would be to send that program to the PEI membership to gauge interest in attending the conference. Persons interested in serving on the steering committee to develop the subject matter and format of this conference should indicate their interest by contacting Bob Renkes at rrenkes@pei.org. The steering committee's work will be conducted this summer by phone. Safety audit services. PEI will launch a program to provide safety audit services to members of the distributor and service & construction divisions this spring. Partially underwritten by PEI, the auditor will evaluate a member's current safety plan documents―with no on-site visit―and offer suggestions for improvement/compliance with governmental safety standards. Meeting with EPA's Office of Underground Storage Tanks. Mark Barolo, deputy director of EPA's Office of Underground Storage Tanks (OUST), reviewed several topics of interest to the industry. He indicated that the guidance document for demonstrating compliance of underground storage tank system components with E15 and biodiesel should be available in May. He also commented that proposed changes to the federal UST regulations should be published in the Federal Register in July, with a 90-day period to file comments. Other board action. The directors reviewed and approved plans and programs submitted by the Education/Convention, Safety, and Young Executives Committees; reviewed and approved a complete 2011 convention schedule and program; and adopted a long range plan for the association. PEI President Dennis Rethmeier, San Diego, California, presided at the midyear meeting. Other officers and directors attending the meeting were: Joey Cheek, Tampa, FL (Vice President) USDA ANNOUNCES BLENDER PUMP PROGRAM "We see this as an opportunity to create a series of incentives so consumers if they have an E10, E15, E85, E20, whatever they might have, that they will be able to easily and conveniently access the fuel that they need," Vilsack said. "Our theory is if we can build out the distribution system more effectively, that will increase the demand for the product, which in turn will encourage Detroit and other auto manufacturers to produce flexible-fuel vehicles." Vilsack was supposed to make the announcement from Gilbarco Veeder-Root's plant in Greensboro, North Carolina, but stayed in Washington, D.C., on Friday to be available to lead his Department's 121,000 employees in the event the government shut down. According to USDA, there are 8.5 million flexible-fuel vehicles in the U.S., which makes up 3.5 percent of the approximately 250 million vehicles on the road. Additionally, USDA estimates that 2,350 retail outlets are currently offering E85. In a related story, USDA Under Secretary of Rural Development Dallas Tonsager told American Coalition for Ethanol members March 29 that the USDA blender pump promotion will initially focus on 10 to 12 states, and later expand nationwide.
