Dennis
Rethmeier, president of Western Pump, Inc., headquartered in San Diego,
California, became the 61st president of the Petroleum Equipment Institute
on January 1. He succeeds Peter Ward, president of Glasgow Equipment
Services, Inc., headquartered in Riviera Beach, Florida, in that post. Joey
Cheek, president of JMP Solutions, Tampa, Florida, is PEI’s vice president for 2011.
One of
Rethmeier’s first duties was to appoint committees for 2011. In all, 194
people were named to serve on 20 PEI committees, with 23 individuals appointed to a committee for the first time.
We
appreciate the willingness of all committee members to contribute their time
and talent to serve the association and the industry. If you are interested
in serving on a committee in the future, contact me at

ENGINE AND AUTO GROUPS JOIN SUITS OVER EPA'S E15 DECISION
The Engine Products Group (EPG)―a newly formed
coalition of four engine and automobile manufacturing groups―has
filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
Circuit challenging EPA's partial approval for the sale of gasoline
containing up to 15 percent ethanol (E15). This suit comes weeks after
lawsuits were filed by several food and petroleum industry organizations
challenging the partial approval. According to EPG's press release, the
petition challenges the ability of EPA to grant a partial waiver for three
specific reasons:

The Clean Air Act does not authorize EPA to issue any
partial waiver decisions,
-
The 2007 Energy Act prohibits the sale of fuel that
could cause engine failure, increase emissions or other problems, and
-
The testing upon which EPA made its decision was put in
the administrative record too late to permit meaningful comment or scrutiny
from concerned groups and stakeholders.
HOUSING DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR YOUNG EXECUTIVES CONFERENCE
PEI has extended the housing deadline for the annual Young Executives
(YE) Winter Conference until January 10. Nearly 60 people, including YE
members and guests, have already registered
at attend the event―the largest number in several years. The conference will be held February 4-5 at the Omni La Mansión
del Rio, located on the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. Program details,

STATIONS CHANGE HANDS
Lehigh Gas Corp., Bethlehem, Pennsylvania,
finalized the sale of 40 retail locations in New York, Pennsylvania and New
Jersey. Sunoco purchased 25 of the stores, three stores were sold to
individual dealers, and the remaining 12 will close over the next two
weeks.―CSP Daily News, January 4, 2011.
7-Eleven Inc., Dallas, Texas, has agreed to acquire ExxonMobil's
interests in 183 retail sites in Florida.
ALTERNATIVE FUEL NEWS FROM EUROPE
Purchasers of any one of nine models of electric cars
in the UK will be eligible for a grant of up to £5,000 from the
government beginning January 1, 2011. In
addition, funds of around £20 million have been given to support the
installation of charging points in the Midlands, Greater Manchester, East of
England, Scotland and Northern Ireland along with existing ones in London,
Milton Keynes and the North-East. The goal is to create 4,000 charging points
will be created over the next 18 months.
Germany moved from E5 to E10 at its 14,000+ refueling
stations on January 1. According to the Federal Ministry for the
Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), E10 will have a
decreased impact on the environment in terms of carbon emissions and will
reduce consumer reliance on diminishing oil reserves. The BMU estimates that
around 90 percent of existing cars in Germany will be E10-compatible. Vehicles unable to run on E10 can
continue to use E5 until it is phased out in
2013.
BRIEFLY NOTED
Platts, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc., announced an
agreement to acquire Oil Price Information Service, LLC (OPIS) from United
Communications Group, a privately held business information provider.
Congress passed a continuing resolution last month to extend the
federal government's operating budget through March 4, 2011. Energy
subsidies will be far more difficult to win over the next two years.
Bipartisan support seen in the past for ethanol subsidies appears to be
weakening.―The Oil Daily, December 27, 2010.
The total volume of fuel sold through the service station network in the
UK fell in 2009 for the second consecutive year. Gasoline consumption
declined at a faster rate than diesel, dropping 2.9 percent in 2009, while
diesel sales fell 1.7 percent in the same period. The number of service
stations in the country fell by 2.9 percent in 2009, to 9,013 sites at the
beginning of 2010.―Service Station Retailing in the
UK 2010, Research and Markets.
The Canadian Renewable Fuel Standard went into effect December 15, 2010.
It requires an average of 5 percent of all gasoline in the country to
contain ethanol. It is expected to add an estimated 2 billion liters/year of
ethanol into the Canadian gasoline pool.

Central Illinois Manufacturing Company, Bement, Illinois, has recently
appointed Rice-Christ, Inc., headquartered in Grand Prairie, Texas,
to represent the company in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas
effective immediately.
Cortland Pump & Equipment Inc., Cortland, New York, has hired Matt
Kime as warehouse/parts coordinator at its Rochester office and Brenda Allen as service
administrator assistant. Kime has 20 years experience in the petroleum
industry while Allen previously worked as a service writer for a car
dealership.
Tom Tait, president of Tait Environmental Services, Inc., Anaheim,
California, was recently elected Mayor of Anaheim.
DEATHS
Kermit Kuebler, retired salesman for Bowser Pump Company and SME
Corporation, died December 18 in South Carolina at the age of 92. He
was the last surviving salesman for Bowser, which closed its doors in Fort
Wayne, Indiana, in 1960.
