Dear PEI Member:

Peter H. Ward, president of Glasgow Equipment Service, Inc., headquartered in Riviera Beach, Florida, became the 60th president of the Petroleum Equipment Institute on January 1. He succeeds Blair D. Shwedo, president of SouthEastern Petroleum Systems, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, in that post. Dennis Rethmeier, Western Pump, Inc., San Diego, California, is PEI’s vice president for 2010.

One of Ward’s first duties was to appoint committees for 2010. In all, 150 people were named to serve on 18 committees, with 13 individuals appointed to a PEI committee for the first time.

We appreciate the willingness of all committee members to contribute their time and talent to serve the association and the industry. As you can see, most PEI committees welcome new members each year. If you are interested in serving on a committee in the future, contact me at rrenkes@pei.org. Here is a complete list of members who have agreed to serve on the Institute’s committees in 2010.

Education/Convention Committee. This committee is responsible for planning seminars, surveys, industry manuals, convention sessions, and other educational programs for PEI members. ETHANOL'S OUTLOOK FOR 2010
Ethanol is expected to be more stable and stronger in 2010, according to Kiplinger's Biofuels Market Alert (December 16, 2009). Two of the key reasons the newsletter cites in suggesting a better ethanol market for 2010 are of particular interest to PEI members. The first is their prediction that the Environmental Protection Agency will approve E15 and stations, primarily in the Midwest, will market an E15 blend by this fall. The second is that E85 usage will increase because the E85 refueling infrastructure will spread, mainly as the result of more funding from DOE to pay for the addition of E85 dispensers. "In some cases, the grants―when combined with other incentives―will more than pay for the cost of installing a new E85 pump," the newsletter said.

API SEEKS EPA DATA ON EPA'S POSSIBLE E15 WAIVER
The American Petroleum Institute (API), in a December 16 letter to EPA air chief Gina McCarthy, urged EPA to release the engineering data behind its recent announcement that EPA is considering allowing the use of ethanol blends up to 15 percent in model year 2001 and newer vehicles. API also asked that EPA delay its decision, which the agency said it would make in mid-2010, until after all studies funded by government and industry on the issue are completed in 2011.

PETROLEUM MARKETING NOTES
Beginning this month, Statoil will sell fuel that contains 5 percent ethanol at 40 percent of the company's stations in southern and eastern Norway. In 2009, the company launched diesel containing 7 percent biodiesel throughout Norway.
Kroger currently has 850 fuel centers in the United States, in addition to selling gasoline at around 700 convenience stores. That's up from 781 fuel centers in January 2009 and 696 in January 2008. "Any new store we open, we try to put them (fuel centers) in there," said Rachael Betzler, spokesperson for Kroger's Cincinnati-Dayton division.―Business Courier of Cincinnati, December 25, 2009.
Tri Star Energy, operator of Daily's brand of convenience stores, will sell 84 of its outlets and stores in a "strategic divestiture." The sites to be divested are scattered throughout its operating territory, the bulk of which are located in Tennessee. Tri Star currently distributes fuel to some 240 locations, including 100 Daily's stores.―Nashville Business Journal, December 22, 2009.
