Dear PEI Member:

I make a habit of talking to other distribution-based trade associations on a quarterly basis to gauge how the petroleum equipment industry compares to similar companies in other industries. Over the last 18 months our industry has typically fared better than most. In fact, my fellow association executives are reporting some sobering numbers. For instance:
  • Electrical distribution off 30-50%. No stimulus money coming in and no turnaround until 2010-11.
  • Plastics distribution down 20-30%. Plastics manufacturing down 30-40%. Bouncing along the bottom but don't know for how long.
  • Steel distribution off 40-50%. Pickup expected to occur sometime in 2011.
  • Landscaping/irrigation equipment distributors down 33%, with manufacturers in the industry down 35-40%.
  • Hardware, lumber and building material distributors down 25-35%, but see improvement in 2010-11.
  • Food distribution doing okay until this summer when retail facilities fell 10% compared to last year. Sales per customer are off, with sustained deflation permeating the industry.

Next week the petroleum equipment industry will gather with about 6,000 of our retail customers. While the retail petroleum business is not exactly setting the world on fire, our customer segment it is doing a lot better than most customers of distributors in other industries. And that makes our industry strong. We see that every day. Registration for the NACS/PEI show and conventions is up while similar shows are off as much as 50%. PEI has not lost a member to bankruptcy for more than 2 years. And interest in PEI and the industry we serve is the highest it has been it over a decade: note the 15 applications for membership listed in this newsletter. That's the most we have published in any TulsaLetter PEI has written since our founding in 1951.

Our industry is healthy because our customers are strong and resilient. Be thankful, because others aren't so fortunate.
