Hazardous Substance [1]

The term used in environmental regulations to classify material which, because of certain properties, is considered to be a threat to human or animal health, or to the environment. Not all industrial chemicals are classified as "hazardous."

Environmental regulations, for example, do not generally classify gasoline as a hazardous substance, although several of the compounds present in gasoline [2] are so classified.
