Lead Technical Writer
Petroleum Equipment Institute (www.pei.org)

 

Title:                         Lead Technical Writer

Status:                  Full-time, Exempt

Reports to:         General Manager

Organization:    PEI is the international trade association for distributors, manufacturers and installers of equipment used in fuel marketing and fluid-handling operations at convenience stores, service stations, airport refueling facilities, bulk plants and other locations. The Institute is comprised of more than 1,500 member companies in 50 states and 81 countries. Headquarters are in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.       Assist PEI staff and committees in the development and publication of PEI Recommended Practices, including increasing responsibilities in the following areas:

a.      

Serve as chief writer for selected new documents and revisions of existing documents:

                                                   i.     

Draft content outlines

                                                 ii.     

Develop project timeline

                                                iii.     

Research subject matter

                                               iv.     

Write initial draft document

                                                 v.     

Guide committee through refinement of draft text and response to public comments

                                               vi.     

Assemble photographs, drawings, charts and tables

                                              vii.     

Edit, copy edit and proofread

                      viii.  Oversee layout and production

b.     

Assist with other documents assigned to an outside consultant

                                                   i.     

Review proposed draft content outlines

                                                 ii.     

Participate in committee meetings, as requested

                                                iii.     

Edit, copy edit and proofread

                                               iv.     

Oversee layout and production

2.      

Upon request, make presentations to industry groups on various technical matters,  regulatory developments and recommended practices

3.      

Assist, as requested, with other content-related projects, including:

a.      

Research and development of industry training programs and resources

b.     

Write PEI Journal articles

c.      

Write website content

d.     

Convention and conference planning and programming

4.      

Build and foster collaborative relationships within the industry to stay informed of  new developments, products and services

5.      

Build and foster collaborative relationships with staff

6.      

Travel, including but not limited to PEI Convention and RP committee meetings

7.      

Other duties as assigned

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
To successfully meet the preceding duties and functions, the Technical Writer must have the following experiences and qualifications:

1.      

Undergraduate degree in technical writing, engineering, journalism, distribution,  business or similar field

2.      

Four or more years of technical writing experience

3.       High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly MS Word and Excel

4.      

The ability to master technical fuel-handling equipment and distribution industry  content

5.      

The ability to work collaboratively with committees, subject matter experts and  other stakeholders

6.      

Exceptional written communication skills, including the ability to:

a.      

Research, synthesize and summarize complex technical and regulatory practices

b.     

Write clearly, concisely and persuasively

c.      

Edit the work of other writers for grammar, clarity, substance and tone

d.     

Follow AP style

e.     

Set and meet regular deadlines

7.      

Provide art direction to graphic designers

8.      

High attention to detail

9.      

Excellent interpersonal communications skills

10.   Willingness to relocate to the association's Tulsa, OK headquarters 

11. Ability to travel, as needed
