PEI Seeks Comments on Bulk Storage Recommended Practices Draft

The comment period is now open for the Petroleum Equipment Institute’s latest draft called Recommended Practices for Installation of Bulk Storage Plants. This latest recommended practices draft was produced by the Petroleum Equipment Institute’s (PEI) Bulk Plant Installation Committee and provides a basic reference that consolidates information concerning the proper construction of new petroleum bulk-storage systems. A printed copy of the draft will be mailed to all PEI members in the United States and Canada, along with a comment form. However, anyone interested in reviewing the draft can download a copy and submit comments directly from PEI’s Web site at www.pei.org/rp800. Comments are due to PEI by Tuesday, January 15, 2008.

The information contained in the Installation of Bulk Storage Plants draft has been assembled from published and unpublished sources provided by equipment manufacturers, contractors, installers, bulk-plant facility owners and regulators. The intent is to describe recommended practices for the construction of new petroleum bulk-storage systems that will maximize system efficiency, prevent surface and groundwater contamination, minimize environmental hazards, reduce safety hazards, and avoid practices that will needlessly increase installation costs.

PEI is committed to supplying top individuals in the industry with the information needed to successfully operate a bulk-storage system and, with that in mind, has produced this document as an industry service. An important part of this process is gathering and reviewing comments offered by petroleum-equipment industry members. These comments, suggestions or recommendations will be used to refine the document, which is scheduled to be published in 2008.
